What the Percentage Actually Means

The number refers to the concentration of isopropyl alcohol by volume — the rest is deionized or purified water.

  • 70% IPA = 70% isopropyl alcohol, 30% water
  • 91% IPA = 91% isopropyl alcohol, 9% water
  • 99% IPA = 99%+ isopropyl alcohol, less than 1% water (anhydrous)

The water content is not a flaw — it's often a feature. For disinfection applications, water slows evaporation and increases contact time with microbial cell membranes, making lower concentrations more effective at killing pathogens than pure IPA. USP-grade IPA is available in multiple concentrations (commonly 70% and 99%), but the "USP" designation means the product was manufactured, tested, and documented to pharmaceutical standards — with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and lot traceability.

Where USP grade is required:

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing — FDA-regulated environments require USP-grade excipients and processing solvents with full CoA documentation
  • Compounding pharmacies — USP standards mandate pharmaceutical-grade materials for compounded preparations
